Two Women And Five Men

Toronto news tells about two women who were assaulted by five men after 2010 New Year celebration.

I am a woman of an older generation, so I have some doubts about the simplicity of the story.

So -- two women (out-of-towners? They have a hotel room they share) are out having a good time greeting the New Year. They have met a group of five young men and spent some time together in the public plaza where the celebration took place.

For those of you who do not follow the news, let me tell you that their photos were extremely clear (I wonder where were they caught in such clear pictures) and after they gave themselves up to the police, their names were made public (and they were all foreign to an English ear).

Hmm... I might be prejudiced, but in my natal Romania there were students from the friendly "socialist" countries from Asia and Africa and the horror stories abounded... The one I liked best was about a Romanian girl who married one such student, went with him to his natal country and ended up sold for a camel. Good business for him, not so good for her... But that means only that I am prejudiced.

Anyway, two women have five gentlemen admiring them and probably courting them, and they end up all seven of them squeezed into one taxi, happily going to the ladies' hotel. Now, if you are of the older generation, you would have had a major "thinking moment". If you are a girl and you have found a beau, would you want his friends packed on top of you two, inside the taxi?

I try to repeat to myself that this is a different generation, and people have different habits...but...this reminds me the case of the boxeur who invited a young lady at a party in his hotel room and she ended up raped...she was the only guest at that party. He ended up his career in jail. She proved her naivete and good-faith by bringing with her a boom-box for the party.

Now, our two ladies of the New Year celebration, they packed inside the taxi... And here I would call the taxi-driver to give his opinion of these seven clients -- were they in accord with each other; were the girls happy with the arrangement or did they seem coerced, etc -- because this may throw some light on the next phase.

Next question would be -- was there a concierge at the reception desk, or did they enter the hotel without being seen by anybody? Were the five men invited to accompany the ladies, or did they forcibly "volunteer" their services?

Once in the room, I have no doubt it was too late for the girls (or ladies) to do anything, unless they were black-belted martial champions.

If this were a fable, the moral would be...

when a sheep, don't invite the wolf for a night-cup

or

when you play with fire...you might get burnt

or

...(you fill in the blanks).

Unhappily, it is the sad reality. Men do not believe that women have the right to change their minds and say NO. Better say it before you become powerless!
