Listen to me, boy. Listen
To the terrible news I dreamt
Toward the morning.

A beautiful girl on top of the mountain
Stood waiting unmoving,
Her hair flowing with the wind,
Her arms open for flight
Toward the morning.

The young man who saw her
Thought to beg for her forgiveness
For he was late.
But she stood unmoving
On the top of the mountain
Watching the horizon
Toward the morning.

He lifted the shotgun
Like the Arabs at a celebration,
One handed and waving it
To gain her attention
Toward the morning.

It was not this man...
It was the other...
In his frenzy
His finger pulled the trigger
Toward the morning.

The girl looked down at him
And flew down to their meeting
Toward the morning

On her way down,
Her soul parted from her body.
She was DOA
(Or Dead On Arrival)
Toward the morning.

His eye could not have helped him
Find the broad side of a barn
Toward the morning,

But he was familiar with her,
So, you see, this is aptly named
"Eye of a Familiar" --
The terrible news
I dreamt Toward the morning!
