Digital Photography For Kids

November 2007

Digital photography may be something you could teach your child about. It's something you both could enjoy doing together, something a little different. It is amazing to me how quickly kids catch on to things around them. They are like little computers absorbing knowledge, and are fascinated with everything new they see and hear. They are so full of questions about the world. We as parents and teachers have the obligation to share our knowledge with these little individuals. They are always very willing and eager to learn.

All you need for starters, is to have a digital camera. Theoretically, you need also to come up with something you can do with the child or children you are trying to teach and entertain at the same time. Creating a photograph journal might be something fun they could do with you. You may want first to talk to them about the activity and let them know how much fun it will be; gain their interest and begin your journey of teaching them about digital photography. However, for a child, the fun of clicking is so overpowering, he/she will need more than a simple permission in order to stat clicking. There are many ways they can have fun with this but you want to give the child some responsibilities, let them use your digital camera with a goal in mind. No need to tell them to take as many photographs as they wish of everything they notice around them -- once you gave them the camera and the permission to use it, they will be at it till either the memory, oe the battery gives way.

Give them that freedom of creativity and I'm sure you'll be surprised with the kinds of photographs these little ones could come up with. Once they have completed their picture taking, show them how to put these photographs into the computer. There's not much to it. After you have done so, finish off by adding some funny captions to the photographs and an assortment of silly sayings. It will be a fun learning experience for them as well as for you, I have no doubt about it.

You can also create games for the children with their newly acquired digital photography knowledge now in hand. They can go out and take photographs of all kinds of interesting things, from any sort of angle they see fit, and they can get as close to the object they are photographing as they'd like (some pictures might get blurry, depending on the camera's capabilities, but even this is part of the learning process). After you all are finished doing this, sit down once again, put the pictures onto your computer, then create some kind of guessing game or matching games for them to enjoy. It will be a huge success, as children just love figuring things out, and having some laughs while doing so.

Give your child or children you are teaching something where they can see the results from something they have created. Build collages from the pictures gathered, and do it with them. That is a really nice way to encourage them and to keep them from getting bored -- we all know how tough it can be when we run out of fun things to keep them entertained. It will give you and the child some time together that's not just about doing their homework, or other, not so much fun stuff. It will allow you the chance to have fun with the child and it will definitely bring you all closer together.
